'Sendong' damage to property nears P1B -  Repost

 "As the death toll from tropical storm "Sendong" (Washi) continues to approach the 1,000 mark, authorities on Wednesday estimated the damage to property caused by the storm as nearing P1 billion.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said that as of 6 a.m. Wednesday, the number of fatalities had reached 976, with 1,603 injured and 46 still missing.

On the other hand, the NDRRMC said "Sendong" had affected 65,067 families or 348,749 people in 319 villages in 31 towns and eight cities in 13 provinces.

Some 10,039 families or 44,213 people are being served in 60 evacuation centers.

The NDRRMC also said the estimated cost of damage to infrastructure, agriculture and school buildings has so far amounted to P999,946,415.

Deaths reach 957, hundreds still missing

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - Tropical storm "Sendong" (international name Washi) is the world's deadliest storm this year, latest data shows.

The storm, which struck Northern Mindanao, the Visayas, and Palawan over the weekend, has now killed at least 957 people, the country's disaster management chief said Tuesday morning.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Director Benito Ramos also said they have lost count of the number of people who have gone missing following the flashfloods spawned by the storm."

Google Help to find Missing Person

MANILA, Philippines - People looking for friends and relatives who have gone missing because of tropical storm Sendong may find help from Internet tech giant Google. Google has set up a Person Finder tool to locate people in the disaster-affected areas in Northern Mindanao and elsewhere. The tool, which is in English and Filipino, also allows people to share information about people in the flooded communities. To search information regarding a person, one only needs to enter a name in the tool and it will provide information based on records in database. The tool was tracking 200 records of people as of Monday afternoon.
