Your Child Safety Tips oN Halloween

Your Child Safety Tips oN Halloween

This is a repost from a mom's choice. Safety tips for our children during this Halloween.
**********************
Keeping your kids safe is no different on Halloween then any other day of the year. While your trick or treating with your kids it's easy to put your guard down. Halloween seems to bring out a lot of tricksters who get caught up in the moment and don’t think with their head.

Here are some suggestions on how to keep your kids safe during Halloween.

* Don't let your children go trick or treating alone.
* Walk up to the door with your kids.
* Carry a flashlight with you.
* Wear reflective clothing
* Try to wear make up instead of a mask, they obstruct the child's view.
* Don't wear a mask while you’re walking down the street with your child.
* Be aware of your surroundings, its easy to get distracted.
* Check your child's candy before they eat any of it.
* Check with the local hospital to see if they offer to x-ray your child's candy.
* Check where the sex offenders live in the area where your child is trick r treating and stay away from those homes. Individual states have a registry too, look for sex offender registry in your state.
* Go to a mall to trick r treating instead of going door to door.
* Participate in an alternative to Halloween such as a church function or friend's party
* Only go up to door where a porch light is on.
* Don't let your kids answer the door when your not home.
* Walk towards the traffic if you have to walk on the street.
* Make sure you know where your child is and what they are doing at all times.
* Be aware of the route your child is taking, if you’re not going with them.
* Remind your kids not to get into the cars of people they don't know.
* Make sure the mask on the costume doesn't obstruct your child's line of vision.
* Be careful who you answer the door to during the trick r treating.

Have a Happy Halloween it's better to be safe.

Go Green Philippines - Green Taxi

Go Green Philippines - Green Taxi
Only in The Philippines!

Making powertrains more efficient is only one part of reducing the environmental impact of vehicles. The energy required to mine and process raw materials into the components that comprise a vehicle and then transport it to the end customer can often amount to a significant fraction of the total energy used to operate the vehicle.

In the town of Tabontabon, Leyte in the Philippines , they have started building new taxis based on renewable materials.. The bodywork is made entirely from bamboo.. Since bamboo is a grass, it can be harvested and it grows back. It's also extremely strong and lightweight. Of course, this vehicle still won't come close to meeting the crash test standards in North America or Europe but for a low cost, low speed vehicle in a rural area it's a great alternative. Even the fuel is renewable as the engines in these vehicles are fueled by biodiesel produced from coconut oil

Kaugalian ng Pilipino sa Undas

my father ashes...

After his cremation.

History of Halloween

History of Halloween

October 31st is a date that both children and adults alike look forward to with anticipation. We decorate our homes and our yards and try to outspook the neighbours. We scare ourselves and each other with movies and pranks and haunted houses. Did you ever wonder how this tradition came about?

The origins of Halloween date back thousands of years ago to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts lived 2,000 years ago in what is now Ireland, northern France and the United Kingdom. Their calendar was different than ours is today, and they celebrated their New Year on November 1.

They believed that on the day before the New Year, October 31, the worlds of the living and the dead co-mingled, and they would celebrate Samhain. During Samhain, it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth, and they would run around causing havoc and damaging crops.

The Celts celebrated the night before the New Year by wearing costumes that typically consisted of animal heads and skins. They built huge, sacred bonfires where they would burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. After the celebration, they would light their hearth fires from the sacred bonfire, and this was believed that it would help protect them during the coming winter.

Halloween survived strongly with the Irish, Scottish, and Welsh Communities and immigrants from these countries brought the tradition to North America. The Irish brought over the idea of the children dressing up and going door to door to collect treats, mainly fruit, which was later used for playing games such as bobbing for apples. Carving pumpkins is believed to have come from the tradition of carving ghoulish faces into turnips to hold candles.

The tradition of Trick or Treating as it has developed in North America seems to have more obscure origins, especially the Trick part. Some believe that the original intention was that the spirits would be blamed for any mischievous behavior that occurred. They would do things like hiding everyday items of those adults who were less popular. These harmless pranks have gradually developed into more harmful ones somehow, such as throwing raw eggs, soaping windows, and smashing pumpkins.

As this Halloween comes around, we can remember where this favorite holiday came from, and most importantly, let's keep it all in good fun!

Aanhin Pa Ang Damo Kung Patay na Ang Kabayo - From DSWD Volunteer

Aanhin Pa Ang Damo Kung Patay na Ang Kabayo - From DSWD Volunteer

This is a repost from lakambini.org which was originated from Ellaganda.com, a volunteer for DSWD.

Here is ella post:

Dear friends,

I’m asking your help to spread the word. Tulungan po ninyo akong ikalat ito. Beyond this, we should also demand action. I disabled a plugin so you can copy the photos of relief goods rotting in DSWD warehouses. You can link this post to your blogs, facebook, websites etc. You can also email the photos.

Philippine News (US based Philippine newspaper) will use this as its front page story this week. Every Filipino has the right to know where the tons of donations from the UN and other counties go. Kahit po nakakahiya sa mga nag-donate. Kung sa ganitong paraan, matutulungan natin ang mga nasalanta, then by all means, let’s do it.

For those who have the time, please try to volunteer sa DSWD warehouses. Getting in was not easy. A friend had to put in a word for us.

Please read on and good luck to us.

(This post was last edited Oct 22, 12:30 pm)

Kahapon, tinanong ng Philippine News si DSWD Secretary Esperanza Cabral:

Editor of Philippine News: Why are the relief goods in DSWD warehouses not moving?

DSWD Secretary Esperanza Cabral: Wala kasing volunteers.

This short interview was done over the phone. Philippine News wanted to hear her side pero ayaw niyang makipag-usap sa press.

I don’t want to accuse her of corruption but at the very least she is showing signs of being totally incompetent. We are in a state of calamity where every second counts. May namamatay araw-araw dahil sa sakit.

In my opinion, these deaths could have been prevented if Secretary Cabral had tried a little harder to do her job.

Deaths from Philippine storms nears 1,000

“Tropical Storm Ketsana left 420 dead and 37 missing when it flooded 80 percent of Manila on September 26, a disaster the government said affected 4.35 million people.

Some areas are still flooded three weeks later and 189,000 people remain in evacuation centres,

Typhoon Parma hit the northern Philippines on October 3 and lingered as a tropical storm for a week, triggering landslides that killed 438 people and leaving 51 missing mostly in mountain communities.

The government agency said Parma affected 4.16 million people, including more than 32,000 who remain at evacuation centres.”

*************************************************************

During the first week after the storm, lumabas ang “bayanihan spirit” ng mga Pinoy. “Makatulong lang kahi’t konti,” katwiran nila.

kung walang volunteers, ano ‘to, komiks?

From Stella Arnaldo’s blog:

“At the offices of many civic groups and private organizations, hundreds of people showed up to volunteer in packing relief goods.

At the Tulong Bayan center at the Expo Centro in Cubao, Most of the volunteers were adolescents as young as 10 years old, along with their kuya or ate in high school and college.

They came in huge numbers, many of them barkadas, classmates or siblings, dressed just in their tees and shorts, wearing their Havaianas. All were just enthusiastic to do their share!

GMA asked world for donations

Our government begged the world for more donations. Sumagot ang buong mundo sa ating panawagan. In less than three weeks, dumaong ang mga barko, ibinaba mula sa mga cargo planes, i-diniliver ng mga trak at container vans ang sandamakmak na relief goods. Cash donations were in the millions of dollars.

But these donations must be coursed through DSWD

Nagpalabas ng directive ang pangulo. Individuals, private companies and other nations were ENCOURAGED to send their donations to DSWD. I blogged about it here and the video of her announcement here.

This PGMA directive sounded suspicious to me then. Now I know why. Here’s the story.

A group of eight people, your ate Ella included, went to one of DSWD warehouses to help in repacking relief goods. We know they need volunteers pero hindi namin akalaing WALANG TAO TALAGA SA LOOB NG WAREHOUSE!

As in sa isang humongous warehouse (1000++ sq.m) NA PUNONG-PUNO NG RELIEF GOODS HANGGANG BUBONG, ISANG DSWD employee lang at ISANG SECURITY GUARD ang tao!!

Kailangang magpa-register at i-schedule ang volunteering

    1) UNICEF Registration (as a volunteer)

The warehouse can only take as much as 50 volunteers at a time or per shift. Here you will find that there is a 4-hour shift, and an option for a 6-hour shift for the volunteers to indicate their availability.

What “volunteers”? Nasaan?

Aside from the 8 of us? Nope, there was nobody there.

I know somebody who wanted to volunteer many times. She was always bumped off, laging nirere-schedule kasi “there were too many volunteers” daw. At tuwing Sunday lang daw puwede. What the hell is going on here?

The relief goods are not going anywhere

We arrived at about 8 am and left by midafternoon and yes, you guessed it right. Walang ibang dumating.

The relief goods are not moving. By the way things look, they are not going anywhere.

LET THE PICTURES DO THE TALKING

I wonder why.

walang tao 2
“Not a creature was moving, not even a mouse.”

walang tao
Parang haunted warehouse ang dating. May multo na yata.

pots and pans

At walang katapusang kaldero pa ulit

delata 2

Sayang ‘yung imported.

kumot
Ano kaya ang laman nito? Hindi rin pinabuksan. Pang-special victim din kaya ito? (teka, dito nga pala galing ‘yung mga kumot)

jica
Mahiwagang mga kahon from Japan Aid.

japan
“Imported” are not included, we have concluded.

toys

pork and beans
PORK AND BEANS? Yup, you’d think kasama ito sa relief bag. Pork and beans lang ‘to, puwede na sigurong ipamigay,

close up pork and beans
Naaah! “Imported” pork and beans from Spain po ito. Sorry, hindi pa rin included

Now let’s take a look at what a victim will get from DSWD

sa loob ng kaldero
Look Ma, sampung lata ng sardinas! How generous! Kaldero ang unang ilalagay sa sako. Sabong panglaba (bar soap) at sampung sardinas sa ilalim. Siyam na sabon sa gilid ng kaldero. Local goods lahat syempre.

tuwalya at napkin
Tapos papatungan ng isang tuwalya at isang pack ng sanitary napkin.

kumot

sako
Last but not the least, lalagyan ng dalawang banig.

tinatahi

Do not delay

do not delay

YOU THINK?? WTF is the matter with these people? ISANG BUWAN!! Do you mean “do not delay ang dati nang delayed”?? Shet.

Halatang-halata.

Marami pang pabubulukin

shipment
Wow! May bagong shipment na naman! At the rate DSWD is moving, next year na madi-discover kung ano ang laman ng mga kahong ito.
nutri biscuit
“The first of two of the largest high-energy food shipments from the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) arrived in the country two days ago for victims of storm “Ondoy” and typhoon “Pepeng.”

The biscuits were fortified with essential vitamins and minerals for supplementary feeding to children, pregnant women and the elderly in evacuation camps. Another 100 tons of biscuits will arrive on Oct. 24, in a continuing effort to provide food assistance to flood victims.

Conclusion

At nandoon pa rin sa loob ang mga imported relief goods, safe, sound and packed as the day they arrived.

Millions of dollars in donations, walang extrang pang-gasolina.

I’m sure they are more than willing to help. Time is of the essence. Huwag kayong suwapang.

You are the government. You have the power, the resources and the money. You just have to really care.

Pinay wins it big in London - Patricia Evangelista

Patricia Evangelista, a 19-year- old, Mass Communications sophomore of
University of the Philippines UP)-Diliman, did the country proud Friday
night by besting 59 other student contestants from 37 countries in the 2004
International Public Speaking competition conducted by the English Speaking
Union (ESU) in London. She triumphed over a field of exactly 60 speakers
from all over the English-speaking world, including the United States,
United Kingdom and Australia, reported Maranan. The board of judges'
decision was unanimous, according to contest chairman Brian Hanharan of the
    British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC).

    PATRICIA'S SHORT SPEECH WORTH READING....
    BLONDE AND BLUE EYES

When I was little, I wanted what many Filipino children all over the country wanted. I wanted to be blond, blue-eyed, and white. I thought -- if I just wished hard enough and was good enough, I'd wake upon Christmas morning with snow outside my window and freckles across my nose! More than four centuries under western domination does that to you. I have sixteen cousins. In a couple of years, there will just be five of us left in the Philippines, the rest will have gone abroad in search of "greener pastures." It's not just an anomaly; it's a trend; the Filipino diaspora. Today, about eight million Filipinos are scattered around the world. There are those who disapprove of Filipinos who choose to leave. I used to. Maybe this is a natural reaction of someone who was left behind, smiling for family pictures that get emptier with each succeeding year. Desertion, I called it. My country is a land that has perpetually fought for the freedom to be itself. Our heroes offered their lives in the struggle against the Spanish, the Japanese, the Americans. To pack up and deny that identity is tantamount to spitting on that sacrifice. Or is it? I don't think so, not anymore. True, there is no denying this phenomenon, aided by the fact that what was once the other side of the world is now a twelve-hour plane ride away. But this is a borderless world, where no individual can claim to be purely from where he is now. My mother is of Chinese descent, my father is a quarter Spanish, and I call myself a pure Filipino-a hybrid of sorts resulting from a combination of cultures. Each square mile anywhere in the world is made up of people of different ethnicities, with national identities and individual personalities. because of this, each square mile is already a microcosm of the world. In as much as this blessed spot that is England is the world, so is my neighborhood back home. Seen this way! the Filipino Diaspora, or any sort of dispersal of populations, is not as ominous as so many claim. It must be understood. I come from a Third World country, one that is still trying mightily to get back on its feet after many years of dictatorship. But we shall make it, given more time. Especially now, when we have thousands of eager young minds who graduate from college every year. They have skills. They need jobs. We cannot absorb them all. A borderless world presents a bigger opportunity, yet one that is not so much abandonment but an extension of identity. Even as we take, we give back. We are the 40,000 skilled nurses who support the UK's National Health Service. We are the quarter-of-a- million seafarers manning most of the world's commercial ships. We are your software engineers in Ireland, your construction workers in the Middle East, your doctors and caregivers in North America, and, your musical artists in London's West End. Nationalism isn't bound by time or place. People from other nations migrate to create new nations, yet still remain essentially who they are. British society is itself an example of a multi-cultural nation, a melting pot of races, religions, arts and cultures. We are, indeed, in a borderless world! Leaving sometimes isn't a matter of choice. It's coming back that is. The Hobbits of the shire travelled all over Middle-Earth, but they chose to come home, richer in every sense of the word. We call people like these balikbayans or the 'returnees' -- those who followed their dream, yet choose to return and share their mature talents and good fortune. In a few years, I may take advantage of whatever opportunities come my way. But I will come home. A borderless world doesn't preclude the idea of a home. I'm a Filipino, and I'll always be one. It isn't about just geography; it isn't about boundaries. It's about giving back to the country that shaped me. And that's going to be more important to me than seeing snow outside my windows on a bright Christmas morning.

    Mabuhay and Thank you.

So, be proud, you are a Filipino

    Total Recall Due to Malfunction

    Total Recall Due to Malfunction

Found this from my inbox. It so encouraging memo and thought I'd share it with you.

The Maker of all human beings (GOD) is recalling all units manufactured, regardless of make or year, due to a serious defect in the primary and central component of the heart.

This is due to a malfunction in the original prototype units code named Adam and Eve, resulting in the reproduction of the same defect in all subsequent units. This defect has been technically termed "Sub-sequential Internal Non-Morality, " or more commonly known as S.I.N., as it is primarily expressed.

    Some of the symptoms include:

    1. Loss of direction
    2. Foul vocal emissions
    3. Amnesia of origin
    4. Lack of peace and joy
    5. Selfish or violent behavior
    6. Depression or confusion in the mental component
    7. Fearfulness
    8. Idolatry
    9. Rebellion
    10. Unawareness of neighbor

The Manufacturer, who is neither liable nor at fault for this defect, is providing factory-authorized repair and service free of charge to correct this defect.

The Repair Technician, JESUS, has most generously offered to bear the entire burden of the staggering cost of these repairs. There is no additional fee required. The number to call for repair in all areas is: P-R-A-Y-E-R.

Once connected, please upload your burden of SIN through the REPENTANCE procedure. Next, download ATONEMENT from the Repair Technician, Jesus, into the heart component.

No matter how big or small the SIN defect is, Jesus will replace it with:
    1. Love
    2. Joy
    3. Peace
    4. Patience
    5. Kindness
    6. Goodness
    7. Faithfulness
    8. Gentleness
    9. Self control

Please see the operating manual, the B.I.B.L.E. (Believers' Instructions Before Leaving Earth) for further details on the use of these fixes.

WARNING: Continuing to operate the human being unit without correction voids any manufacturer warranties, exposing the unit to dangers and problems too numerous to list and will result in the human unit being permanently impounded. For free emergency service, call on Jesus.

DANGER: The human being units not responding to this recall action will have to be scrapped in the furnace. The SIN defect will not be permitted to enter Heaven so as to prevent contamination of that
facility. Thank you for your attention!

    - GOD

How to Avoid Leptospirosis – Bacterial from Rat Urine

How to Avoid Leptospirosis – Bacterial from Rat Urine

LEPTOSPIROSIS is a rare bacterial infection that occurs when humans come into contact with water, wet soil or vegetation with animal urine or feces that contains leptospira. It is potentially fatal because it affects the liver.

As of October 17, 2009 there were recorded 1,336 cases of leptospirosis with 96 deaths,” Dr. Yolanda Oliveros, director of the National Center for Disease Prevention and Control said. On October 16, 2209, the Department of Health (DOH) declared outbreaks of the disease in Tumana, Concepcion I, and Malanday in Marikina City.

There is a likelihood that you have leptospirosis if:

    • You live in an area that is flooded
    • You recently waded or swam in flood waters
    • You have had high fever for 2 to 3 days
    • Your fever is accompanied by body pains, chills, headaches, and red eyes (like sore eyes), jaundice (yellowing of the skin), decreased levels of urination, and when urine is tea-colored (a dark amber color)
    • These symptoms occurred 10 days after you first waded in flood waters, wet soil or vegetation
    • You are male (most cases of leptospirosis occur among males who are more likely to wade in floods)

What to do if you suspect that you have leptospirosis:
    • Seek medical help immediately
    • Take prescribed antibitotics as early as possible to prevent the progression of the disease
    • If the disease has affected your kidney, and there is a possibility of kidney failure, you will have to undergo dialysis

    You can avoid leptospirosis by:
    • Avoiding flooded areas and refraining from coming in contact with flood water.
    • Wearing protective clothing like pants, rubber boots, gloves or rubber jumpsuits if you have to wade through floods. This can protect your skin from bacteria in the water.
    • Washing with soap and water the parts of your body that have come into contact with flood water.
    • Taking prophylactic medicines that prevent the onset of disease.

Father & Son Amazing Ironman Race

Father & Son Amazing Ironman Race
Life Story of Dick & Rick Hoyt

The is very inspiring story of Dick Hoyt and his son Rick (a handicap). A son asked his father, "Dad, will you take part in a marathon with me?" The father who, despite having a heart condition, says 'Yes'. They went on to complete the marathon together. Father and son went on to join other marathons, the father always saying 'Yes' to his son's request of going through the race together. One day, the son asked his father, "Dad, let's join the Ironman together." To which, his father said 'Yes' too.

For your information Ironman is the toughest triathlon ever. The race encompasses three endurance events of a 2.4 mile (3.86 kilometer) ocean swim, followed by a 112 mile (180.2 kilometer) bike ride, and ending with a 26.2 mile (42.195 kilometer) marathon along the coast of the Big Island. Father and son went on to complete the race together.

Here is one of the testimonies in Hoyt site:

"Today, I watched a show called Amazing Families and saw your story. I just wanted to say 'thanks' to your whole family. I am very aware that it is because of people like yourselves, who fought before us to get acceptance in the real world, that our struggles are less. Yes, I do have to be vigilant and fight for my son to have what he needs, but because others have done it before us, it is easier. Now I can go into a school meeting and say, 'Zachary will go to college. Look at Rick Hoyt, he did it, and so will Zach.' You have helped me to affirm that anything is possible if you are willing to be creative and work hard..."

Ralp Lauren Issued An Apology for Image of Imaciated Model. A model's proportions appear to have been altered to give her an impossibly skinny body ("Dude, her head's bigger than her pelvis"). "For over 42 years we have built a brand based on quality and integrity. After further investigation, we have learned that we are responsible for the poor imaging and retouching that resulted in a very distorted image of a woman's body. We have addressed the problem and going forward will take every precaution to ensure that the caliber of our artwork represents our brand appropriately."
